you are enough now
you are not your pain,
nor your poverty,
nor your diction
nor the neighborhood
you came out of.
you are not the melanin in your skin,
nor the spiral in your curls.
you are not your education
you are not your future.
nor your past.
you are not your fears,
nor the hands that touched you;
nor the words that stung.
you are not your memories.
you are not your mother,
nor your father,
nor your sister,
you are not your brother, or aunt, or cousin.
you are not anyone's gray skies,
nor are you their umbrella,
you are not the rain,
nor the sun.
you are not your job.
you are not your failures;
not your successes,
nor your excuses.
you are not your failed relationships.
you are not your apologies.
nor are you your accusations.
you are not the tone in your voice.
you are not your happiness.
you are not PTSD.
nor are you anxiety.
you are not the hats that you wear.
you are not the labels you carry.
nor are you no one at all.
you are not invisible.
You are the soul that listens to heart and head,
You are the mosaic that speaks with boldness or caution
You are a ceramic bowl that is sometimes full,
Sometimes ready to be full again.
You are a person with a new name.
He has designed you.
He has formed your bones and your brain
your eyes, your teeth, the way you write with your left hand
and the way your knees bow out, just slightly, when you walk;
He has done it.
and even if it takes a million years to know it,
He has plucked off the name tags that weigh down your arms
He has loosened the holds of the rejections that have locked in your knees
He has straightened the loneliness out of your spine
He has put bravery in your hands
He has called you enough.
You are enough now.
"I call you by your name. I name you though you do not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God..."
"The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed "Forsaken" and your land shall no more be termed "Desolate", but your land shall be called, "My Delight is in Her," and your land "Unified"; for the Lord delights in you, and your land unified."
"For the law of the Spirit of Life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit."
Poem originally entitled "For M".
