for my dark-skinned babies

Blue-black
Brown-black
Golden-black
Red-black

It’s in your skin
The good kind--
Curves around the inkiness of skies
You give the stars a reason to stretch

It’s in your skin
The kind that history has never been
Sure about, but lift your chin
The sun will show them you

You’ve got that black that sings
Wraps words around your lips
A gospel-laced melody
Warm in the throat, eyes closed.

You’ve got that black that dreams
Mind full of nighttime’s whispers
Magic leaps from brown irises
Into the lives of pages

Blue-black
Brown-black
Golden-black
Red-black

Your melanin is your robe
Make it dazzle with a straight spine
Let those curls pop
Your eyes are diamonds

They’ve been refined by the pain you’ve seen
Because of your blackness
But now you see better
--that purity ain’t whiteness.

So, baby girl
Love your skin
You’ve nothing to prove
About your melanin.

It is beautiful.
